The Punjab government has
officially launched an extensive plantation and environmental protection drive
under the “Friends of Forest” initiative. The campaign aims to expand
Lahore’s green cover, promote eco-tourism, and protect forest areas through
modern, technology-driven monitoring systems—directly supporting sustainable
real estate growth in Lahore.
The initiative was inaugurated
at Jallo by Parliamentary Secretary for Forests Kanwal Liaqat. As part of the Chief
Minister’s Plant for Pakistan Programme, more than 51 million trees will be
planted on 50,869 acres across Punjab. Additionally, 1.37 million saplings are
being cultivated on 3,790 acres of forest wasteland under the CM Agroforestry
Initiative.
The Green Pakistan Programme
has also been expanded, with a target of 466 million trees across 251,000
acres. Another five million trees will be planted along 10,223 miles of canal
banks, making Lahore and the surrounding areas greener and healthier for future
housing and development projects.
To promote eco-tourism near
Lahore, new facilities are being developed at Lal Suhanra National Park and the
Salt Range. A LEED-certified, eco-friendly complex is under construction to
serve visitors and staff. The government has also deployed GPS devices, CCTV
surveillance, wireless networks, and digital monitoring systems to ensure
forest protection.
In hilly regions like Murree
and Kahuta, the Shielding Summits Programme is being rolled out with 600 fire
watchers, new fire vehicles, water tanks, watchtowers, and forest track
restoration. These initiatives will strengthen Lahore’s climate resilience and
support sustainable real estate projects.
The Forest Department is using
GIS-based technology, drones, satellites, and LiDAR systems to monitor and
prevent wildfires, encroachments, and illegal activities. A network of 104
command and control centres now ensures round-the-clock vigilance across
Punjab.
Forest DG Azfar Zia
highlighted that these innovations will significantly improve real-time forest
management. Environmental expert Dr. Salman Tariq welcomed the initiative but
cautioned against plantation drives in flood-prone areas until floodwaters
fully recede.
Officials confirm the
initiative reflects Punjab’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability,
urban planning, and eco-friendly housing projects in Lahore. For property
buyers and investors in Lahore, this initiative ensures a cleaner, greener, and
more climate-resilient environment—making Lahore’s real estate market even more
attractive.
